In a bid to boost sugarcane cultivation, the Bihar government is planning to increase the area under cultivation under the Mukhyamanti Ganna Vikas Yojana before setting up new mills. The aim is to expand sugarcane cultivation as much as possible to ensure a smooth flow of raw materials to the mills. In line with this vision, the government is planning to give free sugarcane seeds to farmers in areas where sugarcane is not currently cultivated.
The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by K Senthil Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary of the Sugarcane Industry Department. Addressing a state-level review meeting, he said that specialised awareness campaigns will be undertaken by the government to encourage farmers cultivate sugarcane. The Additional Chief Secretary has also directed the respective department involved in this program to pay the outstanding dues of the farmers within 15 days. He strictly warned the governmental departments that any negligence in this matter would lead to strict repercussions.
