The Bihar government on Tuesday took action two senior doctors of the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) and the state-run Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur for dereliction of duty, two days after a minor Dalit girl succumbed following rape.

While PMCH acting Deputy Superintendent Dr Abhijeet Singh was divested of his additional duties, SKMCH's Superintendent Dr Kumari Bibha was suspended.

The state department issued a statement directing action against the senior doctors. On May 26, the girl was brutally raped ad attacked following which she was admitted to SKMCH in Muazaffarpur.

Later, she was referred to the PMCH where she was allegedly kept waiting in an ambulance for four hours before finally being admitted.

On Sunday, she succumbed to her injuries in PMCH, prompting a massive outcry. The state health department order stated, "Prime-facie it appears that Dr Kumari Bibha, Medical Superintendent (MS) of the SKMCH, did not properly follow the referral policy while handling the case of the rape victim who died on Sunday. It has found that the hospital administration did not handle the case with sensitivity."

"Therefore, till the completion of the enquiry, the department suspends the concerned MS, with immediate effect, for dereliction of duty. During her suspension period, she will remain posted at the health department headquarters in Patna," the order said.

The order also states that the PMCH acting Deputy Superintendent did not handle the case properly when the victim was brought to the PMCH on Saturday, and it shows his "administrative failure". Hence, he is divested of the additional charges, it said.
