Despite the completion of underground electrification under the Smart City Mission on key roads of Muzaffarpur nearly a year ago, overhead cables continue to hang across major routes, posing safety risks and marring the city’s appearance. Taking a strict view of the matter, Muzaffarpur Smart City Limited and the Municipal Corporation have issued a final 10-day deadline to concerned agencies, including OFC cable operators and generator service providers, to remove all overhead wiring.
The roads where underground electrification has been completed include Bank Road, Suttapatti, Godam Gali, Islampur and Company Bagh Road. Officials have made it clear that once the deadline expires, the Municipal Corporation will initiate forceful removal of the cables.
Senior Manager (Technical) of Muzaffarpur Smart City Limited, Prem Dev Sharma, said that although the underground system is fully functional, OFC cables, generator wires and other overhead lines remain suspended in a disorganised manner. This not only threatens public safety but also undermines the city’s beautification efforts under the Smart City project.
He added that the administration had earlier attempted to remove the cables on two occasions, but resistance from operators prevented completion of the task. This time, authorities have decided to proceed without delay. Any damage caused during the removal process will be the sole responsibility of the concerned agency or individual.

The Municipal Corporation has also warned of legal action against anyone attempting to obstruct the operation. Shopkeepers and service providers have been urged to cooperate, with officials emphasising that removing overhead cables is essential to ensure public safety and enhance the city’s visual appeal.
