The Union Cabinet has approved the Sitamarhi-Jayanagar-Nirmali railway line project, a significant infrastructure development for North Bihar to be built at a cost of Rs 2,400 crore. The project is expected to provide a major boost to the development of the Mithila region and strengthen ties with Nepal.
Project Details And Impact
The new 189-kilometre-long railway line will feature a total of 25 stations, which includes the construction of 21 new stations alongside four existing ones. Major new stations will be built at Bhutahi, Sonbarsa, Sursand, Umgaon, Lalmani and Laukahi.
The project is anticipated to significantly benefit the economies of Sitamarhi, Madhubani, and Supaul districts and improve transportation for four Lok Sabha constituencies: Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Jhanjharpur, and Supaul. By running along the India-Nepal border and through the Sursand tribal area, the line is poised to provide an unprecedented impetus to trade, tourism, and local industries, while also promoting the cultural heritage of Mithila.
Political Context And Statements
JDU National Working President and Rajya Sabha MP, Sanjay Kumar Jha, expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. He hailed the project as a major example of the 'double-engine government' at work and stated that it would further strengthen the deep-rooted 'beti-roti' relationship between India and Nepal.
