A four-lane road stretching nearly 7.80 kilometres is set to be built parallel to the JP Ganga Path, along the banks of the Ganga from Gaighat to Didarganj. In preparation for the project, the district administration on Tuesday carried out a major anti-encroachment drive from Bhadra Ghat to Kangan Ghat, clearing both permanent and temporary structures obstructing the existing roadway.
The operation, which continued until evening under the supervision of Patna City Circle Officer Chandan Kumar, along with other officials and police personnel, resulted in the demolition of seven permanent and 20 temporary encroachments. Significant portions of five parks under construction along the Ganga, developed at an estimated cost of Rs 43 crore, were also removed using bulldozers.
Protests by encroachers took place throughout the drive. Circle Officer Chandan Kumar said that the identified encroachments are being cleared to facilitate the construction of the new four-lane road.
He added that the anti-encroachment campaign will continue on Wednesday and will extend up to Didarganj, except in cases currently pending before the court. He urged residents occupying government land illegally to vacate it voluntarily.
During the demolition drive, which began at Bhadra Ghat, structures including roadside warehouses, cattle sheds, huts, tea stalls, snack kiosks, and park boundary walls were razed with the help of a JCB machine. Several individuals claimed ownership of the demolished land, but officials instructed them to present valid documents to support their claims.
