Haryana News: In a shocking incident, a 16-year-old national-level basketball player lost his life in a freak accident in Haryana’s Rohtak after a basketball pole fell directly onto his chest. The young athlete, identified as Hardik, was practising at the Lakhan Majra court on Tuesday when the pole, reportedly not planted firmly, toppled forward and crushed him.

His friends immediately rushed to help him, but the young athlete could not be saved. Following the incident, police recovered the body and handed it over to the family after the post-mortem. Authorities have registered a case, and an investigation is underway.

Video Captures Fatal Freak Court Accident

A chilling CCTV footage of the incident shows the 16-year-old national-level basketball player practising alone in the court. The video shows him running from the three-point arc and leaping up to touch the basket, a common basketball drill to improve a player's scoring abilities.

Hardik successfully completes the first manoeuvre. However, as he attempts the drill a second time, clutching the basket’s rim, the pole suddenly uproots and crashes onto him. The full weight of the equipment fell directly onto his chest.

His friends and playmates, who must be taking a break, immediately rushed to the court and managed to quickly lift the pole to rescue Hardik. However, the impact was so severe that the young athlete died soon after.

Speaking to NDTV, Hardik’s neighbours stated that he had recently been selected for the national team and had just returned from a training camp. His father, Sandeep Rathi, had enrolled Hardik and his younger brother at a sports club near their home for regular practice.

Following the incident, police recovered the teen’s body and handed it over to the family after the post-mortem examination. A case has been registered to probe the incident.
