In the capital city of Patna, the Food Safety Administration has seized a large consignment of fake and chemically-treated potatoes during raids in the Mithapur and Meena Bazar market areas. Officials discovered that old potatoes were being coated with red ochre soil and chemicals to make them appear fresh and shiny, posing a serious health risk to consumers.

A team led by Food Safety Officer Ajay Kumar seized approximately two truckloads of the adulterated potatoes. The samples have been sent to a laboratory for detailed analysis. A preliminary investigation revealed that the potatoes were being sourced from Chhattisgarh, arriving by truck daily at 6 am. Local traders would purchase the stock by 9 am and distribute it for sale in various neighborhoods.

During the raid, more than half a dozen traders fled the scene. Authorities are currently working to identify them to initiate further legal action. The officer stated that the adulterated potatoes were being procured for Rs 20-25 per kg and sold to consumers at an inflated price of Rs 70-75 per kg.

How To Identify The Adulterated Potatoes

Officials noted that the seized potatoes had several distinct characteristics. They advised consumers on how to identify such products:

Smell: They emit a strong chemical odor instead of a natural, earthy scent.

Appearance: The color of the potato's interior does not match its artificially shiny exterior after being cut.

Buoyancy: They may float when placed in water, whereas genuine potatoes typically sink.

Shelf Life: They tend to spoil within two days.

According to health experts, the chemicals used on these potatoes can cause significant harm to the liver and kidneys. Regular consumption can lead to health issues like constipation, bloating, and loss of appetite.

Restaurant Inspections Lead To Sales Ban

In a related action, the administration also conducted surprise inspections at the Saanvi Collection Cafe on Boring Road and the Skyline Biryani House in Raja Bazar. Suspecting the use of adulterated paneer (cottage cheese), officials collected samples from both establishments. As a precautionary measure, the sale of paneer and biryani at these restaurants has been halted pending the lab results.
