The central government is expected to approve next month for the construction of the Takht Sri Harmandir Corridor, a major project aimed at providing seamless access for devotees visiting Takht Sri Harmandir Ji Patna Sahib, the world’s second-largest Sikh Takht. The corridor, to be built at a cost of several crores, will offer easier movement for pilgrims from India and abroad to the birthplace of the tenth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj.

The proposed corridor will also connect key religious sites in the area, including Bal Leela Gurdwara, Siddha Shaktipeeth Chhoti Patandevi, the Jain Shwetambar Temple, Harimandir Gali Shiv Mandir, and Kali Mandir.

Takht Sri Harmandir Management Committee president Sardar Jagjot Singh Sohi said on Sunday that the committee has been consistently pursuing the project, after submitting a proposal to the Union Tourism Minister last year. He added that repeated reminders have been sent to expedite the approval process.

Sohi said lakhs of devotees visit Patna Sahib every year, but often struggle due to severe congestion in the area. The committee has requested that the new corridor be developed on the lines of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, enabling devotees to reach the temples directly after taking a dip in the Ganga. As proposed, the corridor will be built in two sections, an upper and a lower area.

Committee vice-president Sardar Gurvinder Singh said that with the completion of the Ganga Pathway, travel to Patna Sahib from the airport, Patna Junction, and other parts of the city has already become easier. Plans are also in place to widen and beautify the adjoining lanes, including Harimandir Gali, Bara Gali, Daribabaz Bahadur Gali, and Kali Sthan Marg.

He emphasised that the corridor’s design will ensure that the original heritage and traditional character of Takht Sahib remain intact.
