Following the instructions of District Magistrate Dr Thyagarajan SM, a special anti-encroachment drive has been launched in Patna from today. Releasing the December calendar for the encroachment removal drive, the District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police Kartikey K Sharma have formed nine teams.
The special drive will be conducted in six zones of the Municipal Corporation, including Nutan Rajdhani, Patliputra, Kankarbagh, Bankipur, Azimabad, and Patna City, along with the Municipal Councils of Khagaul, Phulwarisharif, and Danapur Nizamat.
Officials and personnel from various departments, including the Administration, Municipal Corporation, Traffic Police, Transport, Revenue, Road Construction, Health, Police, Fire Service, Bridge Construction Corporation, Telecommunications, Forest Division, and Electricity, will carry out the action jointly.
The District Magistrate has given clear instructions that an FIR (First Information Report) will be lodged if encroachments reappear in areas that have been cleared, with strict legal action to be taken against anyone obstructing the drive.
The DM stated that keeping public places, pavements, service roads, and major routes free from encroachment is essential for the public interest. Major routes, including Kankarbagh, Gandhi Maidan, Rajendra Nagar Terminal, Dak Bungalow, Kargil Chowk, Ashok Rajpath, Boring Canal Road, Saguna Mor, JP Ganga Path, and Atal Path, have been specifically identified.
The Urban Management Unit has been directed to conduct regular encroachment removal drives every month based on a pre-determined calendar. Sub-Divisional Officers and Sub-Divisional Police Officers have been instructed to identify and take strict action against habitual encroachers while conducting the anti-encroachment drive, and also to carry out special vehicle checks.
The DM said that any kind of unauthorised vending, illegal parking, or commercial activity on main roads will not be tolerated. Urban local bodies have been empowered to impose a penalty of Rs 5,000 for temporary encroachment and Rs 20,000 for permanent encroachment.
Instructions have also been given to completely remove encroachments around hospitals such as IGIMS, PMCH, AIIMS, and NMCH, to ensure no obstruction to the movement of patients and ambulances.
For effective monitoring of the special drive, a five-member cell has been formed, which includes the Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Additional District Magistrate (Urban Management), SP (Security), Additional Municipal Commissioner, and City Magistrate.
Removing encroachments will improve the traffic system and also prevent accidents, with the drive to be in effect until December 31. Work is continuously being carried out on various fronts, such as escalator-equipped Foot Over Bridges (FOBs), underpasses, the widening and beautification of roads, and creating alternative arrangements for vendors, to provide the public with better facilities in line with the government's objectives.
