The fourth phase of the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) has officially commenced, with a target of constructing 45,000 km of rural roads across the country at an estimated cost of Rs 76,000 crore. The announcement was made by Union Minister of State for Rural Development Kamlesh Paswan, who has directed officials to promptly prepare and submit implementation reports.

Addressing the media on Wednesday after a high-level meeting with Bihar Rural Development Minister Shravan Kumar and Rural Works Minister Ashok Chaudhary at the Chief Secretariat, Paswan highlighted the Centre’s commitment to accelerating rural infrastructure development, particularly in Bihar.

During the meeting, Minister Shravan Kumar submitted several key proposals to the Union Minister, including:

-Release of Rs 200 crore in pending wages under MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act)

-Clearance of Rs 2,007 crore under the material component of MNREGA

-Speedy allotment of housing for Dalit, Scheduled Tribe, and backward class families still awaiting homes

Shravan Kumar informed the Centre that 94 lakh families in Bihar have been identified as homeless through surveys, a figure expected to rise following the Centre’s revised criteria. Of these, 24 lakh families belong to Scheduled Tribes, underscoring the urgent need for housing support.

He also demanded a revision of daily MNREGA wages, currently Rs 245, noting that workers often earn over Rs 300 through private or alternate employment, making MNREGA a fallback option. The minister said the state is working to create 6,800 playgrounds under MNREGA, and urged the Centre to provide adequate funds for the same.

Rural Development Department Secretary Lokesh Singh and other senior officials also attended the meeting.
