Purnia Airport is almost ready for operations, with 95 per cent of construction work on the terminal building, runway, roads, and other facilities completed. Preparations are underway for the airport to be handed over by September 5, ahead of its formal inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 17. The airport, with the longest runway in Bihar at 9,000 meters, will be the fourth in the state after Patna, Gaya, and Darbhanga.
The airport, developed at a cost of around Rs 400 crore, will feature modern facilities including a terminal building, apron, cargo complex, AC chiller plant, STP, water and fire tanks, electric substation, aviation fuel farm, administrative office, commercial plaza, surface parking, and aerobridge. Officials say these facilities will make Purnia Airport one of the best in the state.
Purnia enjoys superior road connectivity compared to other districts in Bihar, with multiple NHs, SHs, and four-lane roads connecting the city. An expressway linking Purnia to Patna is under construction along NH 107, NH 31, NH 57, and NH 131A.
The airport will be accessible from Koshi-Seemanchal and neighbouring regions, including parts of West Bengal, Nepal, Bhagalpur, Khagaria, Araria, Saharsa, and Madhubani. Road widening projects are in their final stages, including the Harda-NH 31 route, Maranga bypass, and Chunapur Road, ensuring smooth access from all directions.
Excitement is building among residents of Seemanchal, eager to board the first flight from Purnia Airport. The airport code PXN has already appeared on IndiGo Airlines’ website, with ticket booking expected to open shortly. People from various sectors, including business, politics, education, and healthcare, are actively trying to book the inaugural flight.
Officials and representatives from the Airport Authority of India (AAI), along with senior district officers, are working around the clock to complete the remaining work and ensure the airport is ready for handover by September 5.
