Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav, who visited the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Purnea for a “surprise” inspection, slammed the Bihar government for poor health infrastructure and corruption. The RJD leader highlighted the lack of beds and staff at the government medical college. He called out the present alliance government, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, as “double jungle raj”. Yadav’s remarks came a day ahead of the scheduled visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Purnea.

The former Bihar deputy chief minister shared a video on his official X (formerly Twitter) account and wrote about his surprise visit to the GMCH: "Watch a glimpse of the deplorable state of the healthcare system under 20 years of NDA in the video." Visuals showed unclean toilets which were unfit for use, and bedsheets that had not been changed for weeks.

"This is a medical college and hospital, but there is no ICU here. The trauma centre is not operational. There is no cardiology department. Three patients are made to lie on a single bed. Bedsheets of patients are not changed even after 15-20 days. The toilets for patients with orthopaedic issues and those requiring disability-related surgeries are two feet high. There is absolutely no cleanliness," he wrote.

Tejashwi Yadav claimed that only 55 nurses were working at the hospital in three shifts against the sanctioned 255. Moreover, 80 per cent of the doctors’ posts were vacant, with just four OT assistants for the entire hospital. He added that many departments in the hospital remain non-functional and the doctors exist only in name.

Yadav also pointed out the corruption in the construction of hospital buildings and the purchase of medical equipment. The RJD leader said the poor infrastructure of the government medical facilities is forcing the poor people in Purnea to seek private medical facilities at high prices.

"Prime Minister Modi ji will surely give a sermon on the corruption, unemployment, poverty, failures of the NDA government, looting of the poor in the name of treatment, and the deplorable state of education and healthcare systems, as well as the double jungle raj of the double-engine government in Bihar over the past 20 years," he said.

Tejashwi Yadav also urged the Prime Minister and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to visit the GMCH and look at the dilapidated condition of the medical facility.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Purnea Airport on September 15 and address a public rally at Shishabari village, where people from Purnea, Katihar, Araria, and Kishanganj districts are expected to attend.
