Bihar Elections: As the Election Commission has announced the schedule for the Bihar Assembly Elections, the political parties have started making poll promises to convince voters. In line with that, Rashtriya Janata Dal's (RJD) Tejashwi Yadav has drawn attention with a huge promise of providing government jobs to one person from each family if he forms the government.

The poll promise is huge and can play as one of the decisive factors in the polls to come, but the promise requires a reality check to understand how big the challenge is.

According to the caste census report of Bihar, the state has approximately 29.7 million families. As a couple of years have passed, the figure is expected to have increased.

What do numbers say?

Going by this figure of 2023, Tejashwi will have to give jobs to 2.97 crore families. There are approximately 94 lakh families whose monthly income is Rs 6,000 or less. The entire population of the state is approximately 13.07 crore and lakhs of them migrate to other states and cities in search of employment.

At present, there are 48 lakh government employees in Bihar, and the number of pensioners is 68 lakh. So, if Tejashwi comes to power and delivers on his promise.

The number of public employees in the state will rise to 3.45 crore. Even if the current public employees' families are left out, the number will rise to at least 2.5 crore.

Two challenges

The promise comes with two challenges, with first being the scale of employment and the second being the financial burden the state will face in a stroke.

Providing such a large number of jobs will require significant resources from the Bihar government, including financial management and infrastructure development.

Highlights of Tejashwi Yadav's promise

1. Government job to one member of every family: Tejashwi Yadav has announced that if the Mahagathbandhan government is formed, then one member of every family will be given a government job.

2. Law in 20 days: He has said that an Act (law) will be brought in this regard within 20 days of the formation of the government.

3. Target accomplishment in 20 months: Tejashwi claims that he will provide jobs within 20 months.

4. Naukri Navjagaran Mission: Tejashwi has named it "Naukri Navjagaran", which aims to eliminate unemployment in Bihar.

5. Attack on Nitish government: Tejashwi has targeted the current NDA government and said that they have given insecurity and unemployment to Bihar
