Grand Alliance Coordination Committee Chairman and Leader of the Opposition, Tejashwi Yadav, may contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly Election from two constituencies. One of the seats being considered is the Phulparas Assembly constituency in Madhubani district.

Phulparas holds historical significance. It is the same seat from which Karpoori Thakur contested after becoming Chief Minister in 1977. At the time, Devendra Prasad Yadav, who had won the seat on a Janata Party ticket, vacated it to make way for Thakur. Devendra later went on to become a member of the Legislative Council and was elected to the Lok Sabha multiple times from Jhanjharpur. It is considered a safe seat for socialist leaders.

In the 17 assembly elections held so far, Congress has won only four times. Yadav candidates won 10 of these elections. Additionally, Karpoori Thakur won one by-election.

Why Only Phulparas?

If Tejashwi Yadav contests from Phulparas, it could significantly influence the political dynamics in the Kosi and Seemanchal regions. In January this year, the RJD held a grand event in Phulparas to mark the birth anniversary of Karpoori Thakur, which Tejashwi attended. During the event, local leaders and supporters urged him to contest from the constituency. However, while he neither accepted nor declined the proposal at the time, his decision remains pending.

Before Tejashwi, Lalu Prasad Yadav has also contested elections from multiple assembly and Lok Sabha seats. In the 2020 assembly elections, this seat was held by the Congress. However, there is a growing view that if Tejashwi Yadav decides to contest from Phulparas in addition to his traditional seat of Raghopur, it could lead to confusion among voters.

RJD, Congress Vie For Phulparas Constituency

The possibility of Tejashwi Yadav contesting from Phulparas is being discussed because the Grand Alliance has yet to reach a consensus on the seat. While the Congress is unwilling to give up its claim, the RJD remains equally firm. However, if Tejashwi agrees to contest from Phulparas, the seat will almost certainly be allotted to the RJD.
