A group of girl students in Bihar’s Vaishali district on Tuesday vandalised the vehicle of an Education Department officer while protesting against the poor arrangements at their school. The students of Girls High School in Mahnar village claimed that they had no benches or tables in their classrooms and had to sit outside. They also alleged that a female cop slapped some of them when they raised their voice.

The students blocked the road and threw stones at the vehicle of Mahnar Block Education Officer Ahilya Kumar, breaking the windshield. A viral video showed the girls surrounding the vehicle and attacking it. Poonam Kumari, one of the police personnel who intervened was also injured in the incident.

Neeraj Kumar, the sub-divisional officer (SDO) of Mahnar said the school admitted more students than its available seating capacity, which led to the problem. He also stated that the school administration was considering the possibility of holding the classes in two shifts.

"The basic problem is the lack of adequate seats in the classroom. The school authorities let in more students than could be accommodated in the classroom. The girls, who have been forced to sit outside, blocked the road and vandalised the official's vehicle. Later, the local police pacified the agitating students and enforced order,” the police official said.

Pushpa Kumari, another cop who was present at the spot, blamed the students for the violence and said that they were not ready to resolve the matter peacefully. She said that a letter was written to the education department about the issues of the student but still students violently staged a protest.
