IRCTC Hotel Scam: The IRCTC scandal, which dates back to when Lalu Yadav was the Railway Minister of India between 2004 and 2009, has once again landed Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family in trouble.
The case revolves around alleged corruption in awarding contracts for the operation and maintenance of two hotels, BNR Ranchi and BNR Puri, under the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).
What Is The IRCTC Scam
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has alleged that the contracts for these hotels were irregularly awarded to a private company called Sujata Hotels Private Limited. According to the agency, the tender process was manipulated to favour Sujata Hotels, and in return, a shell company linked to the Lalu family was given land at a throwaway price.
Specifically, the CBI alleges that IRCTC sold land in Ranchi for the Radisson hotel project at a significantly lower price than its market value.
What Are The Allegations Against Lalu Yadav, Rabri Devi, Tejashwi
Lalu Prasad Yadav is the main accused in the case, with allegations of masterminding the entire conspiracy. His wife, Rabri Devi, and son, Tejashwi Yadav, are also accused of benefiting from the deal.
Other accused include former Union Minister Prem Chand Gupta, whose wife owns Sujata Hotels, and several IRCTC officials. A total of 14 people have been charged in the case.
IRCTC Hotel Scam: Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court Observation
The court has observed that the conspiracy was hatched with Lalu Yadav's knowledge. The case is now in the trial stage, and the court will decide on the guilt and punishment of the accused. This case could become a significant issue for the Lalu family and their party, RJD, ahead of the Bihar elections.
