8th Pay Commission Latest Update: The Union government earlier this year, in a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 16 approved the formation of the Eighth Pay Commission. Although the members of the commission have not yet been officially announced, however a significant development concerning the staffing and functional structure of the panel has come to light.

According to a recent government circular, the Department of Personnel and Training (Dopt) will oversee the recruitment process following its established guidelines. The Expenditure Department of the Finance Ministry has recommended that 35 commission posts be filled by deputation. Representatives of several government agencies will be temporarily assigned to the Commission to help develop its recommendations.

The deputed employees will return to their parent departments after the Eighth Pay Commission fulfils its mandate and submits its report to the government. The Dopt is expected to issue additional guidelines to assist in this approach.

The implementation timeframe is still uncertain

Although the government has yet to finalize the names of the members of the commission, recent events suggest that internal preparations are progressing rapidly. According to media reports, the recommendations of the Eighth Pay Commission may be implemented from January 1, 2026. According to some rumours, the implementation may be postponed to 2027, in which case the upgraded salaries may be paid with arrears from the original date.

Pensioners and government workers across the country are keeping a wary eye on the situation as the Pay Commission recommendations will have an immediate impact on their retirement benefits, allowances, and pay scales.

More clarity is expected in the coming weeks as the government finalises appointments and proceeds with establishing the terms of reference for the Eighth Pay Commission.
