Air India: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has fined Air India Limited Rs 90 lakh for flying with unqualified crew members. The penalty is based on the regulator's findings of a serious safety lapse in the airline's operations. Air India Ltd operated a flight under the command of a non-trainer line captain paired with a non-line-released first officer.

In a statement, the DGCA said that the penalty was imposed after Air India Ltd submitted a voluntary report about the incident on July 10. The regulator then conducted a comprehensive investigation into the airline's operations, including document checks and spot checks of its scheduled facilities.

The investigation revealed that several post holders and employees of the airline had committed deficiencies and multiple breaches of regulatory provisions, which could have had a significant impact on safety. The concerned captain of the aircraft and DGCA-approved post holders of Air India Limited were allowed to explain their position by way of a Show Cause Notice (SCN) dated July 22, 2024. The reply submitted by the concerned failed to provide a satisfactory justification.

That is why the DGCA has initiated enforcement action and imposed the above penalties in respect of the provisions of the existing rules, and statutes.
