Ayushman Bharat Card: The central government has announced that it would give health insurance benefits of up to Rs 5 lakh under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) for senior citizens, who have crossed 70 years of age and the advantages would be irrespective of their financial status.
Till now, only residents with feeble fiscal condition have been getting the facility of free health insurance under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. However, after the new decision of the administration, now all senior residents will be given this important facility.
Who is eligible?
Under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, all residents above 70 years of age regardless of their fiscal condition will be qualified to avail health insurance of up to Rs 5 lakh. Under this, a particular card will be given to them with the help of which they will be able to take advantage of the scheme. The senior citizens who are now included under Ayushman Bharat will get an extra top-up inclusion of up to Rs 5 lakh which will not be imparted with other family members. Residents under the age of 70 will keep on getting health insurance inclusion of up to Rs 5 lakh for the entire family as before.
What are the benefits of the Ayushman Bharat Scheme?
Under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), senior citizens will get health coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh every year. Medical examination, treatment, and consultation, Operations, surgeries, and other medical procedures, Food and accommodation during treatment in the hospital, ICU services and non-ICU services, Medicines and medical supplies, Diagnostic and lab tests, and other medical services can be covered under the government scheme.

Senior citizens having insurance coverage can also apply
Senior citizens who are currently receiving benefits from any government health insurance scheme such as the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), or Ayushman Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) may continue their current scheme or take advantage of the Ayushman Bharat Scheme.
Even if one is covered by a private health insurance policy or the Employees State Insurance Scheme (ESIC), he can still take advantage of the Ayushman Bharat Scheme. This scheme is estimated to provide free health insurance coverage of Rs 5 lakh annually to about 6 crore elderly persons from 4.5 crore families. This will assist the elderly in receiving better healthcare services to prevent serious illnesses.
How to apply for an Ayushman Bharat Card?
- One can apply for the Ayushman card at the official website of Ayushman Bharat (https://abdm.gov.in/).
- Senior citizens can apply it offline also. They need to visit the nearest PMJAY center.
- While applying, citizens may be required to submit necessary documents, such as their Aadhaar card and ration card.
- After the application is processed, senior citizens will be given an e-card with a unique AB-PMJAY ID. Through this card, they may access all of the health services provided under the scheme.
