How do cyber frauds happen?

Kalpana Singh, manager of PNB Bank, Sarojini Nagar, Delhi, says that most of the cyber frauds happen through UPI, ATM card cloning and mail phishing.

UPI Fraud:- Two days ago, one of my customers got a call. The caller introduced himself as a delivery boy and said he could not find the address and requested to Transfer one rupee to the same number so that he could trace the location. As soon as the customer transferred one rupee, 95 thousand rupees were deducted from his account.

ATM Card Cloning:- Cyber thugs install skimmers in swipe machines or ATMs to clone credit cards and debit cards. As soon as you swipe the card or insert the card to withdraw money from the ATM, all the details of your card are copied into this machine.

After this, cyber thugs prepare a card clone by putting all the details of your card in a blank card through a computer or other technology and withdrawing money with the help of it.

Email Scam/Phishing:  You will receive a mail, in which everything will look exactly like the mail that you get from your bank. The link to the website will be slightly different from the original one. You may be asked for your personal information here or you may be asked to check payment or offer by clicking on the link, but as soon as the process is done, money will be deducted from your account.

What to do in case of bank fraud?

According to cyber law expert Pawan Duggal and cyber security expert Deepak Kumar Dwivedi, to stop cybercrime, the central government issued cyber crime helpline number 1930 in the year 2022.

In case of any kind of bank fraud, immediately call helpline 1930 from the registered phone number and complain. If you complain 1930 within an hour of the fraud occurring, the amount fraudulently withdrawn from your account will be returned.

Information needs share

The complainant will have to provide information like bank name, registered mobile number, transaction ID, account number, wallet ID/UPI ID from which the money has been debited. If fraud has occurred through debit or credit card, then in such a case the card number will also have to be given. Screenshots of transactions or any information related to fraud can be shared.

Keep in mind that bank employees or cyber security officers will not ask you for an ATM PIN or OTP. If someone asks about OTP or PIN, then you do not have to give this information.

What are the benefits of a helpline number?

National Cybercrime Reporting Portal, Reserve Bank, all banks, financial institutions UPI etc. are connected to this helpline. As soon as you register a complaint on the helpline number 1930, a message is sent to all the institutions.

In case of fraud, transaction from one bank to another takes time. If the message reaches the concerned bank during this interval, the fraudulent transaction is stopped immediately. Within some time the amount deducted from your account will also be returned.
