Today, the festival of Dhanteras is being celebrated in India, marking the beginning of Diwali. On this occasion, the number of people buying gold increases. The biggest question for people remains whether the jewellery they are purchasing is genuine or not. In India, the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) regulates gold purity, and customers can now digitally verify their hallmark using the BIS Care app. This allows buyers to ensure that gold marked as 'hallmarked' truly meets the standards of purity.
What Is BIS Hallmarking?
Hallmarking for gold jewellery and artefacts has been mandatory in India since June 2021. A hallmarked item typically has three important marks: the BIS logo, a purity mark such as 22K916 (where 916 signifies 91.6 per cent purity), and a Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) code. This HUID is a six-digit alphanumeric ID used for the online verification of the jewellery.
How To Check Gold With The BIS Care App?
- Download the app Install the BIS Care app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Register with mobile number Open the app and complete the basic registration by entering your mobile number.
- Select 'Verify HUID' On the home screen, tap the 'Verify HUID' option.
- Enter HUID code Find the six-digit HUID code engraved on the jewellery and type it into the app.
View results The app will display the following information on the screen:
- Jeweller's name and registration.
- Hallmarking centre's name.
- Item type and purity.
- Match with invoice If the data displayed in the app matches the details on the jewellery and the bill, the hallmark is genuine.
- Complain on mismatch If the information does not match or the HUID is invalid, file a complaint in the 'Complaints' section of the app.
- Method to check via the BIS Website If you do not want to download the app, the same HUID verification service is available on the official BIS website. Simply entering the same six-digit code will cause the website to display the jewellery's registration and purity details.
What To Do If The Details Do Not Match?
If the data displayed on the BIS Care app or website is incorrect or incomplete, users can file a complaint through the 'Complaints' section of the app. This directly sends the information about suspicious or incorrect hallmarking to BIS.
Points to note before buying The online hallmark check will only work if the HUID is present and legible on the jewellery. Items purchased before June 2021 may not have the HUID code. In such cases, the gold can be tested by visiting a BIS-recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centre (AHC).
