Economic Survey 2026: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman tabled the Economic Survey 2025-26 in the Lok Sabha on Thursday. In the Economic Survey 2025-26, the government predicted that the nation's economic growth would be at 6.8-7.2 per cent in FY27, supported by strong macro fundamentals and a series of regulatory reforms.

Additionally, according to the report, India anticipates a full-year real growth rate of over 7 per cent.

Fastest growing among major economies

According to government data released earlier this year, the Indian economy will grow at a better-than-expected 6.5 per cent in FY2026, driven by increased investment and improved manufacturing.

This estimate is higher than the Reserve Bank of India's new forecast of 7.3 per cent, compared to 6.5 per cent growth last year.

Concerns about the India-US trade deal

India is one of the few major economies that does not have a trade deal with the US, and uncertainty is weighing on the outlook.

US President Donald Trump imposed a 50 per cent tariff on Indian exports in August—the highest in Asia—partly because India purchased Russian oil.

The US accounts for about 18 per cent of India's exports.

India's Innovation Ecosystem Shows Resilience

According to the survey report, India's innovation ecosystem has shown strong and consistent progress over the past few years, with the country moving up from 66th place in 2019 to 38th place in the 2025 Global Innovation Index (GII).

The survey highlights how government initiatives in manufacturing, research, start-ups, and technology have helped India emerge as a global hub for innovation and industrial development.

According to the report, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has played a key role in promoting domestic manufacturing, especially in the smartphone sector.

Remittance Recipient

India is the world's largest remittance recipient, and foreign exchange remains strong: Economic Survey

India is the world's largest remittance recipient, with inflows of $135.4 billion in FY25, supporting stability in the external account.

The survey said that the share of remittances from advanced economies has increased, reflecting the increasing contribution of skilled and professional workers.

What is the Economic Survey?

Prepared by the Economic Division of the Economic Affairs Division of the Finance Ministry and under the supervision of the Chief Economic Adviser, the Economic Survey documents provide information on the state of the economy and various indicators for 2025-26 (April-March).

Post the Finance Minister tabled the survey, the Parliament was adjourned till February, when Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Budget for the financial year 2026-27. It will be her record ninth consecutive Union Budget, marking a significant milestone.
