EPFO members wait for interest to be credited in their account seemed to be over soon as the union government has reportedly gave approved 8.25 per cent rate of interest on provident fund (EPF) deposits for 2025-26. The amount is likely to be credited to over seven crore contributing members this month, news agency PTI reported, citing a source.
EPFO initiates interest payment on EPF after the rate is ratified by the government through the Finance Ministry.
The source told PTI that the finance ministry has given its concurrence to an 8.25 per cent rate of interest fixed by the Central Board of Trustees (CBT), the apex decision-making body of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).
Interest Rate Was Fixed At 8.25%
Earlier, on March 2, 2026, the CBT, chaired by Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, had decided to fix the interest rate at 8.25 per cent for the financial year 2025-26, the third consecutive year it has been maintained.
The proposal was then sent to the Ministry of Finance for approval, as the EPF is the guarantor of the Government of India.
The Finance Ministry has approved the proposal after examination, and the EPFO is expected to deposit the interest rate of 8.25 per cent for 2025-26 in customers' accounts this month on the directive of the Labour Ministry, the news agency reported.
Under the new ecosystem developed by the EPFO, the EPF interest will be credited to the customers’ accounts immediately, sources said. In February last year, the EPFO had retained the interest rate at 8.25 per cent for FY2024-2
EPFO Interest Rate History
In 2024, the EPFO slightly increased the interest rate for the financial year 2023-24 to 8.25 per cent from 8.15 per cent in 2022-23. In March 2022, the EPFO reduced the interest rate on deposits for the financial year 2021-22 to 8.10 per cent from 8.5 per cent in 2020-21, the lowest in more than four decades.
The 8.10 per cent rate for 2020-21 was the lowest since 1977-78, when the rate was 8 per cent.
