Google Layoff 2024:  Alphabet Inc, the parent company of Google, is laying off hundreds of employees in its digital assistant, hardware and engineering teams as it continues its drive to cut costs.

According to a report in Bloomberg, the company said that Affected employees include those working on the voice-based Google Assistant and augmented reality hardware teams and some employees in the central engineering organization.

In the second half of 2023, our teams have made many changes to become more efficient and effective, and to align their resources with their biggest product priorities, as per a report a Google spokesperson said in a statement.

Some teams continue to make these types of organizational changes, including eliminating some roles globally, the spokesperson further said.

Affected employees have begun receiving notices and will have the opportunity to apply for open positions anywhere at Google, the company said.

In a statement posted on social networking site X, formerly known as Twitter, the Alphabet Workers Union criticized the move.

"Our members and teammates work hard every day to build great products for our users, and the company cannot continue to fire our coworkers while making billions every quarter. We won’t stop fighting until our jobs are safe," the posted Alphabet Workers Union.
