Wrong UPI ID Transation Recovery:In today's digital world, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) apps like Google Pay (GPay), PhonePe, and Paytm have made transactions seamless for millions of Indians. However, with convenience comes the risk of errors. A simple mistake like entering the wrong UPI ID or mobile number can send your money to the wrong recipient. If you find yourself in such a situation, don't panic. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you get your funds back.
Can you get your money back if you send it to the wrong UPI ID?
Yes, you can get your money back, but it depends on the recipient's cooperation and the bank's policies. The RBI and NPCI have issued guidelines to resolve such disputes, but refunds are not guaranteed. Taking quick action will improve your chances of getting your funds back.
What to do immediately after a wrong transfer
If you realize that you have transferred money to the wrong UPI ID, you should follow these steps:
1. Confirm the transaction details
- Open your UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, etc.) and look for your transaction history.
- Check whether the money was sent to the wrong recipient by checking whether the UPI ID, mobile number or bank account details match.
Take a screenshot of the transaction as proof, which will help in filing a complaint.
2. Contact the recipient
- If the suspected recipient is someone you know, contact them directly and request a refund.
- For unknown recipients, check if their mobile number is visible in the app. You can try calling or messaging them politely to resolve the issue.
3. Report the transaction in the payment app
- Most UPI apps have dedicated support for handling wrong transfers. Here’s how you can raise a dispute:
- Google Pay: Open the app → Tap on your profile → Select “Help & Feedback” → Select “Payment Issue” → Identify the wrong transaction and raise a dispute.
PhonePe and Paytm: Follow similar steps by navigating to their customer support departments.
4. Contact your bank
- If the recipient does not respond, contact your bank immediately.
- Call the customer care helpline and explain the issue.
- Share details like the transaction amount, UPI ID, and UTR (Unique Transaction Reference) number.
The bank can work with the recipient’s bank to attempt a reversal.
5. Report the matter to NPCI or RBI
If the bank does not take action within a reasonable time frame, escalate the issue to:
NPCI: File a complaint through the NPCI portal under their “Dispute Resolution Mechanism”.
RBI Ombudsman: Use RBI’s Complaint Management System (CMS) to file a formal complaint online.
