The World Bank has named India among the world’s most income-equal societies in its latest Gini Index ranking, placing India in fourth place. India has secured a score of 25.5, standing behind only the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, and Belarus, surpassing several developed economies in income equality.

Gini index is a world-wide accepted parameter to measure income distribution in any particular country. In its report card, the lower score is directly proportional to great equality, meaning any country is as economically equal as low it scores in the Gini index.

India’s score of 25.5 marks significant progress from 28.8 in 2011. On the other hand, developed countries like China stand at 35.7, the United States at 41.8, and all G7 and G20 countries are left behind India in this regard.

India Registered Significant Drop In Poverty Level

According to the World Bank’s Spring 2025 Poverty and Equality Brief, India has recorded significant improvement in poverty reduction between 2011 and 2023. During the said period 171 million people came out of extreme poverty, with the poverty rate falling from 16.2% to just 2.3%, based on the global threshold of USD 2.15 per day. 

According to the Ministry of Social Welfare, sustained policy efforts focused on poverty alleviation, financial inclusion, and direct welfare support have driven this achievement.
