The Income Tax Department sending emails and/or SMS messages to several taxpayers has sparked concerns that their refunds may have been cancelled. However, the department has clarified that this is a misconception. Refunds have only been temporarily paused in cases where the exemption claims made in the Income Tax Return (ITR) do not match the salary details submitted by employers in Form 16. According to the department, a surge in refund claims prompted an internal risk check, leading to the automated alerts being issued.

Possible Reasons Behind Alerts

The Income Tax Department has flagged a “significant discrepancy” between the exemptions claimed by taxpayers in their Income Tax Returns (ITR) and the salary figures reported by employers in Form 16 (Annexure II). According to the department, these mismatches have led to inflated refund claims, prompting authorities to temporarily withhold the processing of such returns.

But at the same time the department has yet to release an official statement regarding the bulk alerts, while taxpayers continue to report inconsistencies between the messages received and the details shown on the ITR portal.

Is Refunds On Hold, Or Cancelled?

The tax department has clarified that refunds have not been rejected but merely placed on hold. Once the mismatch is corrected or a valid explanation is provided, the refund will be released. Whenever the tax department detects inconsistencies between ITR filings and available financial data, it automatically sends an email or SMS alert to the concerned taxpayer.

Experts advise taxpayers to carefully verify that all claimed exemptions, including House Rent Allowance (HRA), Leave Travel Allowance (LTA), and other deductions, are backed by proper documentation and accurately reflected in their employer-issued Form 16. The department has also warned that failing to respond or rectify the issue may be viewed as intentional non-compliance, increasing the chances of a detailed scrutiny or investigation.
