Meta Layoff:  Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is planning to sack about 3,600 employees or nearly 5% of its total workforce, Bloomberg reported citing an internal memo. The social media giant will consider the layoff on performance-based measures.

According to the resort, Mark Zuckerberg, Meta CEO, took this decision to let go of employees whom management did not deem highly efficient. He said it would help the pool of talent across the organization to get in "capable individuals." As of the end of September 2024, data showed Meta had around 72,400 employees.

"I've decided to raise the bar on performance management and quickly remove underperforming people," Zuckerberg said, focusing on their efficiency and productivity emphasis.

What Does the layoff mean?

The lay-offs are part of the broader strategy employed by Meta to see a 'non-regrettable' 10% cut in its workforce by the end of the present performance cycle. Affected employees will receive severance packages assured by the company.

These cuts represent an ongoing trend of the US, tech giants; Microsoft also recently is announcing similar layoffs that would involve less than 1% of its workforce.

Recent Strategic Restructuring At Meta

The lay-offs fit in with the "Year of Performance" initiative of company cuts to reduce costs and restructuring taken up by Zuckerberg. Other ways to achieve this include the following-

Loosened Content Policies- The moderation guidelines are revised to be lenient on controversial topics such as immigration and transgender rights through relaxed policies.

Ended Fact-Checking Program- Meta has stopped relying on third-party fact-checking regarding any claims arising in the U.S. in a move that raised concerns about possible misinformation spread.

These measures reflect a wider restructuring at Meta, which emphasizes operational efficiency and light staffing.
