NHAI Toll Charge Hike: Commuters, who use national highways and expressways, will now have to pay more for their road journeys, as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has hiked toll charges by an average of 4 to 5 per cent on highway stretches across the country. The revised toll charges for vehicles on national highways across the country have come into effect from Tuesday, news agency PTI reported quoting a senior highways ministry official.
According to the official, the change in toll charges is part of the annual exercise to revise rates in line with changes in wholesale price index-based inflation. Every year, the revised rate is implemented from April 1.
Fee collects at 855 toll plazas
There are about 855 user fee plazas on the national highway network, at which user fee is collected as per the National Highway Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008. These include about 675 publicly funded fee plazas and 180 concessionaire-operated toll plazas.
The revised rates will impact commuters on major routes across the country, including the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Eastern Peripheral Expressway and Delhi-Jaipur Highway.
Truck fares to be not impacted
SP Singh, Fellow, Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training (IFTRT), told PTI that the increase in toll (road usage charges) in relation to the increase in WPI during March 1-31, 2025 will not have any significant impact on truck fares, as after the 10-15 per cent increase in cargo offers, truck fares on major trunk routes across the country have already increased by 2.5-3 per cent during March 1-31, 2025.
SP Singh said that in a way truck drivers have already mitigated the toll-free hike by the National Highways Authority of India. According to him, the increase in truck fares in March 2025 was disproportionately higher than the general increase in toll charges.
