PETROL and Diesel Rate Today: In India, fuel prices remained the same on Monday (6 March), keeping costs unchanged for around nine months now. In the national capital, petrol is selling at Rs 96.72, while diesel in Delhi is retailing at Rs 89.62 per litre.

Meanwhile, in Mumbai, petrol costs Rs 106.31 per litre, and diesel is selling at Rs 94.27 a litre. The prices of petrol and diesel differ from state to state, depending upon various criteria like Value Added Tax (VAT), local taxes, freight charges, etc.

The last time when there was a country-wide change in fuel rates was 21 May 2022, when Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reduced excise duty on diesel by Rs 6 per litre, and Rs 8 per litre on petrol.

In India, Public sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) namely Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL), and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) update their prices every day in line with global benchmark prices and forex rates. Any changes made in petrol and diesel prices are enforced from 6 am daily. Recently, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri asked OMCs to lower the retail prices of both petrol and diesel if there is a fall in the crude oil prices in the international market fall. OMCs faced a loss of Rs 21,200 crore for selling petrol and diesel lower than the cost price.
