Das, who took over as governor in December 2018, has played a key role in stabilizing the RBI during a period of tension between the central bank and the government. Known for his close relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Das's leadership has been instrumental in tackling several economic challenges.

His current term ends on December 10. Das, who has already served for more than five years, the standard term for RBI governors in recent decades, will be placed in the league of Benegal Rama Rao, who served as governor for 7.5 years between 1949 and 1957.
