The Indian equity indices closed on a negative note in Thursday’s trading session. At close, the Sensex was down 542.10 points or 0.82% at 65,240.68, and the Nifty was down 144.80 points or 0.74% at 19,381.70.

About 1758 shares advanced, 1702 shares declined, and 145 shares unchanged. The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices also ended on flat note.

UPL, Titan Company, Bajaj Finserv, ONGC and ICICI Bank are among the top losers on the Nifty, while gainers included Adani Enterprises, Eicher Motors, Divis Labs, Infosys and Adani Ports.

Among sectors, pharma index gained 1%, while bank, metal, oil & gas and realty down 1-2% each.

The Indian indices had also opened lower on August 3. The Sensex was down 262.80 points or 0.40% at 65,519.98, and the Nifty was down 74.80 points or 0.38% at 19,451.70. 

Sun Pharma, Divis Labs, HDFC Bank, Dr Reddy's Labs were among major gainers on the Nifty, while losers were UPL, UltraTech Cement, HDFC Life, Bharti Airtel and Maruti Suzuki.

On the other hand, Indian Rupee closed 15 paise lower against US Dollar at 82.73 . The domestic currency had opened 14 paise lower at 82.72 per dollar on Thursday versus Wednesday's close of 82.58.

“Indian Rupee depreciated on Thursday as domestic markets fell for the third consecutive day and a strong US Dollar. FII outflows also put downside pressure on Rupee. US Dollar gained on safe-haven buying and upbeat jobs data,” Anuj Choudhary - Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas, was quoted as saying by Moneycontrol.
