The Indian indices hit record highs after a muted start on Thursday in the early morning trade. At close, the Sensex was up 474.46 points or 0.71% at 67,571.90, and the Nifty was up 146.00 points or 0.74% at 19,979.20.

Top gainers on the Nifty included ITC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, ICICI Bank and Cipla, while losers were Reliance Industries, Infosys, UltraTech Cement, HCL Technologies and Bajaj Finserv.

Among sectors, FMCG, bank and pharma indices rose about a percent each and Oil & Gas index up 0.5%. On the other hand, the Information Technology index fell 0.8% and the power index fell 0.4%.

The Indian equity market had opened on a flat note in the early trading session on Thursday. Sensex was down 79.10 points or 0.12% at 67,018.34, and the Nifty was down 24.50 points or 0.12% at 19,808.70. 

Power Grid Corporation, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, IndusInd Bank, SBI Life Insurance and NTPC were among the major gainers on the Nifty, while losers were HCL Technologies, Infosys, Britannia Industries, Nestle India and Apollo Hospitals.

On the other hand, Indian Rupee  ended 10 paise higher at 81.99 per dollar versus previous close of 82.09. It had opened marginally higher at 82.03 per dollar on Thursday.
