Stock market closing:  The domestic benchmark Sensex surged 354 points to close over the record 75,000 mark for the first time, while the broader Nifty touched a fresh all-time high on Wednesday, led by gains in FMCG, energy, and metal stocks. The 30-share BSE Sensex rose 354.45 points, or 0.47 percent, to settle at 75,038.15. During the day, the index gained 421.44 points or 0.56 percent to touch a high of 75,105.14.

The NSE Nifty 50 index advanced 111.05 points or 0.49 percent to close at 22,753.80. During the day, it rose 132.95 points or 0.58 percent to touch an all-time intra-day high of 22,775.70. Key indices hit intra-day lifetime highs on Tuesday, with the Sensex scaling the historic 75,000 mark for the first time, but ended in the red after profit-booking in index heavyweight Reliance Industries.

Shares of ITC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Asian Paints, Tech Mahindra, Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel, State Bank of India,  and Nestle gained from the Sensex pack. Larsen and Toubro, Maruti, Mahindra and Mahindra, and HDFC Bank were among the losers.

The majority of sectors supported the movement with FMCG, Metals, and Energy being among the top gainers. According to Ajit Mishra, SVP - Technical Research, Religare Broking Ltd, the broader indices also gained between 0.7 and 0.9 percent after two days of consolidation.

In Asian markets, Tokyo and Shanghai fell, while Hong Kong ended positively. South Korean markets are closed for the election.

European markets are trading in the green. Wall Street ended Tuesday with gains. Global oil benchmark Brent crude rose 0.18 percent to $89.58 a barrel. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 593.20 crore on Tuesday, according to exchange data. The benchmark BSE closed down 58.80 points, or 0.08 percent, at 74,683.70 on Tuesday. The NSE Nifty was down 23.55 points, or 0.10 percent, at 22,642.75.
