Stock Market: Domestic benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty recorded record gains in volatile trading, extending their gains for a third day after buying Tata Motors and HDFC Bank. The 30-share BSE Sensex closed up 99.56 points or 0.12 percent at 81,455.40, a new all-time closing high, with 16 components advancing and 14 ending lower. The index opened higher, jumping 459.43 points, or 0.56 percent, to hit an intraday high of 81,815.27.
The NSE Nifty rose 21.20 points, or 0.09 percent, to an all-time high of 24,857.30. The index rose 135.65 points, or 0.54 percent, during the day. Despite intense volatility, the combined market capitalization of all BSE-listed companies hit the $5.50 trillion milestone for the first time.
Tata Motors, Bajaj Finserv, NTPC, Power Grid Corp, Asian Paints, Titan, IndusInd Bank, Maruti Suzuki India, and Tata Steel were the biggest gainers from the Sensex pack.
ITC, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, Bharti Airtel, Hindustan Unilever, Ultratech Cement, and Reliance Industries were among the laggards. In the Asian market, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong ended in negative territory. European markets traded on mixed notes. US markets rose higher on Monday.
Brent crude, the global benchmark, fell 0.05 percent to $79.73 a barrel. According to exchange data, foreign institutional investors offloaded equities worth Rs 2,474.54 crore on Monday.
The 30-share BSE Sensex rose 23.12 points, or 0.03 percent, to close at 81,355.84, a new all-time high. The NSE Nifty rose marginally by 1.25 points or 0.01 percent to end at a new all-time high of 24,836.10.
