Wholesale Inflation: The wholesale price inflation rate climbed to 1.84 per cent in September as food items, particularly vegetables, became more expensive, official data released on Monday showed. In August, the Wholesale Price Index (WPI)-based inflation was 1.31 per cent. It was (-)0.07 per cent in September of last year.
The food inflation rate climbed to 11.53 per cent last month from 3.11 in August. As a result, the inflation rate in vegetables increased to 48.73 per cent from (-)10.01 per cent in August. Potato and onion inflation stood at 78.13 per cent and 78.82 per cent, respectively, in September.

"Positive rate of inflation in September 2024 is primarily due to increasing in prices of food articles, food products, other manufacturing, manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers & semi-trailers, manufacture of machinery & equipment, etc," the commerce and industry ministry said in a statement.
The fuel and energy category saw inflation of 0.67 per cent in August compared to 4.05 per cent in September. The Reserve Bank of India, which mainly considers retail inflation while setting monetary policy, left the benchmark interest rate, or repo rate, unchanged at 6.5 per cent in its monetary policy review earlier this month. Retail inflation data will be released later today.
