South Africa national cricket team vs Afghanistan national cricket team: Fans encountered a watershed moment in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 as South Africa secured an epic win against Afghanistan after battling it out in a double Super Over match at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Wednesday. After winning the toss, Rashid Khan, the captain of Afghanistan, invited South Africa to bat first as they posted 187 for 6 after 20 overs.
In response, Afghanistan huffed and puffed to level the score (187/10) due to Noor Ahmad's heroics, enforcing a Super Over in the game. However, it was a beginning of an splendid battle of see-saw between the two teams, who were unwilling to give up the game.
Super Over 1
In the first Super Over game, Afghanistan batted first by the virtue of being the team chasing the total. They posted 17 runs in six balls courtesy all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai smashing two boundaries and a maximum.
In response, South Africa, who were down and out with 7 runs required off the final ball, got another lease of life by batter Tristan Stubbs, who smashed a maximum to enforce another Super Over.
Super Over 2
This time, it was South Africa's turn to bat first as swashbuckling David Miller found his mojo to smash consecutive sixes. The onslaught powered South Africa's total to 23 as Afghanistan were set a target of 24 to win the game.
Afghanistan got off to a worst possible start with Mohammed Nabi getting out on a two-ball duck which left the equation at 24 required off 4 balls. It seemed like a improbable task at that moment, however, the top-scorer of Afghanistan's first innings - Rahmanullah Gurbaz (84 off 42) - stepped up.
Proteas' experienced spinner Keshav Maharaj, who got off to a great start in the first two balls, got smashed for three consecutive sixes by Gurbaz to bring the equation to 6 required off the final ball.
Maharaj, who was under pressure, bowled a wide delivery, which brought the equation to 5 required off 1.
