Bangladesh vs New Zealand 2nd Test: Bangladesh batter Mushfiqur Rahim became a part of an unfortunate instance in the second Test against New Zealand at Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Wednesday, December 6.

Rahim became the first Bangladesh batter to be adjudged out for obstructing the field in international cricket as the hosts opted to bat first after winning the toss.

The instance took place in the 41st over of Bangladesh's first innings when Mushfiqur defended a delivery from seamer Kyle Jamieson and touched the ball with his right hand as it bounced towards the stumps.

Rahim was given out as his dismissal was counted as obstructing the field. He became the eighth batter to be dismissed in such a way in Tests and 11th overall.

Handling the ball was originally one of eleven modes of dismissals in cricket and it was integrated into the Law of obstructing the field during the amendments of Laws of Cricket in 2017.

According to Law 37.1.2, "The striker is out obstructing the field if, except in the circumstances of 37.2, in the act of receiving a ball delivered by the bowler, he/she wilfully strikes the ball with a hand not holding the bat. This will apply whether it is the first strike a second or a subsequent strike. The act of receiving the ball shall extend both to playing at the ball and to striking the ball more than once in defence of his/her wicket."

Bangladesh were off to a disappointing start as they lost four wickets for just 47 runs with the openers Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Zakir Hasan departing cheaply for 14 and eight runs respectively.

Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto was the next to go as he was dismissed by Mitchell Santner for nine runs followed by Mominul Haque's wicket for five runs.

Mushfiqur and Shahadat Hossain joined each other in the middle and recovered from the early damage with a promising partnership.

The dup added 57 runs for the fifth wicket before Rahim's dismissal for 35 runs.

Notably, Bangladesh are already leading the two-match series 1-0, having won the first Test in Sylhet by 150 runs.
