Cricket World Cup 2023: A sport earns its global status through the devotion of its fans. As enthusiasts embrace, value, and follow the game, it garners worldwide recognition. Cricket has witnessed a surge in global presence, propelled by the popularity of T20 matches in both club and international arenas. But this time around, the enduring format of ODI cricket has also captivated a substantial fan base on a global scale.
The Cricket World Cup 2023 achieved a milestone by welcoming its one millionth fan at the South Africa versus Afghanistan match at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. With six matches left in the 13th edition, it is on track to be the most attended tournament in International Cricket Council (ICC) history.
Chris Tetley, the ICC Head of Events, expressed excitement about the event's success, emphasising the enormous support and interest in the ODI format, highlighting the global value of World Cup cricket.
“With over one million attendees and record-breaking viewership, the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has reminded cricket fans around the world of the support and interest in the ODI format that highlights how much World Cup cricket is valued," Tetley said.

Tetley anticipated more records being shattered during the knockout stages, as the home favourites India will also feature in them (on 15th October).
"As we look ahead to the knockout stages, we look forward to this event breaking more records and showcasing the best about cricket in one day,” Tetley added.
Jay Shah, the Board of Control for Cricket in India Secretary (BCCI) Secretary, expressed immense joy at fan attendance surpassing previous records, affirming the World Cup's aim to be the greatest ever. He extended gratitude to dedicated fans, State Associations, and all stakeholders for their relentless pre-event efforts.

"Our vision was to make this World Cup the greatest ever and I am truly delighted that we have broken all previous records. My sincere thanks to our devoted fans, the State Associations and every stakeholder who worked tirelessly in the run-up to this mega event," BCCI secretary said in a statement on X (formerly twitter).
"As we now approach the crucial home stretch, we will continue to work closely with the ICC in providing a truly memorable experience for everyone involved. The best is yet to come!" he added.

India will play New Zealand or Pakistan in the first semi final on November 15. While Australia will face South Africa in the second semi final on November 16.
