Gautam Gambhir, the former India batter has parted ways with his IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants after spending two years with them as a mentor.

Gambhir has joined Kolkata Knight Riders as their mentor ahead of IPL 2024 as he is set to begin his second stint with the two-time champions.

After a successful career with KKR as their captain, leading the side to the IPL title in 2012 and 2014, Gambhir began his coaching career with LSG, having joined them as a mentor in 2021 with the franchise making it to the playoffs in both seasons.

"As I announce the end of my impeccable journey with Lucknow Super Giants, I am filled with love and immense gratitude towards all the players, coaches, support staff, and every individual who made this journey memorable," Gambhir said.

"I am not an emotional person and not many things move me. But this is different," Gambhir said in a statement. "This is back to where it all started. Today, there is a lump in my throat and fire in my heart as I think about slipping into that purple and gold jersey once again. I am not only coming back to KKR but I am coming back to the city of joy. I am back. I am hungry. I am number 23. Ami [I am] KKR."

Gambhir, who won the T20 World Cup (in 2007) and ODI World Cup (in 2011) with the Indian team, joined Knight Riders in 2011 and played for them till 2017. During the period, Knight Rider qualified for the IPL playoffs five times

"Gautam has always been part of the family and this is our captain coming back home in a different avatar as a 'Mentor'," team co-owner Shah Rukh Khan noted. "He was sorely missed and now we all look forward to Chandu Sir and Gautam in instilling the never-say-die spirit and of sportsmanship they stand for, in creating magic with Team KKR."

The Knight Riders coaching staff features Chandrakant Pandit as the head coach with Abhishek Nayar (assistant coach), James Foster (assistant coach), Bharat Arun (bowling coach), and Ryan ten Doeschate (fielding coach) also in the line-up.
