After the memorable World Cup-winning campaign in India, Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is eyeing a comeback in Test cricket, the format he last played six years ago. Maxwell has not given up on representing Australia in red-ball cricket again and is hopeful to get a chance on sub-continent conditions at the end of the current ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle.
Australia are the current World Champions in ODI and Test formats after securing both the titles this year and there are not many spots in the side to grab. David Warner's retirement after the Pakistan Test series will only create an opportunity for the opening slot while all-rounders Cameron Green and Mitchell Marsh firmly hold their spot in the Test side.

“I'm quite understanding the circumstances of the current side. They're playing some really good cricket, they’re World Test champions. There's not a lot of spots up for grabs as far as Tests at home, but I know that when it does come to a sub-continent tour I can be a real viable option to hopefully fill a role in that side," Maxwell said on Australian radio station SEN on Tuesday.

Maxwell played a pivotal role in Australia's winning campaign in India and contributed 400 runs in nine games including an unbeaten knock of 201 runs against Afghanistan at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to avoid the biggest upset of the tournament. He wants to replicate that success in whites for Australia.
Australia are scheduled to play a Test series against Sri Lanka at the start of 2025 and Maxwell feels he has a chance to regain his place in red-ball cricket.
“I don't think there's another sub-continent tour until early 2025. So, I'll keep trying to plug away and hopefully get an opportunity at that stage," he added.

Refraining from former Australia pacer Mitchell Johnson's remarks on David Warner, Maxwell called the southpaw 'absolute champion' of Australian cricket.
“I'm not going to throw my name into some headlines about this. But Davey's been an absolute champion of Australian cricket for a long period of time and the selectors were pretty clear on what they thought of it (selecting him). I'm looking forward to seeing Davey in that first Test and him making a lot of runs this summer,” he said.
Maxwell will start his summer by leading Melbourne Stars in the upcoming season of Big Bash League starting on December 7.
