IND-W vs ENG-W 1st ODI: India women's skipper Harmanpreet Kaur is impressed by left-arm spinner Shree Charani, who played a huge role in helping the Women in Blue defeat England women by 3-2 during the recently concluded women's T20I series. In her first T20I series, she was adjudged the Player of the Series award as she was the highest wicket-getter since she took 10 wickets after playing in five matches at a brilliant economy rate of 7.46.
Charani is also part of the ODI squad as the Harmanpreet Kaur-leed side will be playing a three-match ODI series beginning from Wednesday, July 16. Harmanpreet reckoned that Charani grabbed her attention during the WPL 2025, where she had played just two matches and had taken four wickets at a staggering economy rate of 8.87.
"She's a key player for us. In the WPL, where she played two three [two] matches [for Delhi Capitals], she was impressive. From there only, we all [team management and selectors] had a chat that she can be a very good option for us,” Harmanpreet told reporters during the pre-match press conference.
Charani didn't take much time to settle in the shortest format as she registered match-winning figures of 3.5-0-12-4 during her debut T20I at Trent Bridge. But Smriti Mandhana was adjudged the Player of the Match award for scoring her first century in this format, whereas Charani was praised for her brilliant performance.
"We kept rotating players to see who fits in well, who could give most to the team. She has been outstanding for all of us. A player like her is very important. Along with her, even Radha [Yadav] has made a solid comeback. Hope their combination will keep helping the team like it is,” she concluded.
After winning the T20I series, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side will aim to get a flying start during the upcoming ODI series, which will help them prepare for the ODI World Cup, which is expected to begin on September 30.
