Yograj Singh, a former Indian cricketer, is known for making candid and often controversial views. He has regularly chastised famous former India captain MS Dhoni, blaming him for the collapse of his son Yuvraj Singh's international cricket career. Yograj has made headlines again with his comments on Arjun Tendulkar, Sachin Tendulkar's son, who had sought Yograj's coaching to improve his cricket skills, drawing attention to their interaction.
According to Times Of India, in a recent interview when questioned about his experience teaching Arjun, Yograj's reaction sparked a new debate, adding to his habit of making inflammatory statements.
"Aapne heera dekha hai koyle ki khan mein? Wo koyla hi hai. [Have you seen a diamond in a coal mine? He is the coal]," the video of his statement went viral, in which he said.
Yograj's direct and scathing judgment of Arjun's cricketing capabilities has provoked a stir in the cricketing community and beyond. His metaphor correlating Arjun to coal, meaning that he is just one among many and does not stand out, has yielded a hectic controversy. While some have denounced Yograj's harsh statements, others have defended his right to express his honest opinion, noting his coaching ability and experiences.
"Nikalo patthar hi hai, kisi tarashgir ke haath me dalo to chamak ke duniya ko kohinoor ban jata hai (It is coal that is rock when taken out from a mine, but if it is given in proper hands, it goes on to become Kohinoor. It is priceless. But if that same diamond reaches a person who does not know its worth, he destroys it. I don't say it myself that Yograj Singh is a great crafter, Yuvraj Singh says it, 'there is magic in my dad's hand, he made me what I am.' Earlier, I was abused 'Hitler, Dragon Singh, I hate my father'. Everybody hated me in my home. My relatives said, I should not have been a father," Yograj Singh said as quoted by Times Of India.
"But he walked his path. And by God's Grace you got Yuvraj Singh," he said.
A video of Yuvraj Singh went viral, in which he showed concern about his father Yograj Singh's mental condition. Yuvraj claims that his father's recurrent and contentious statements, especially those directed against MS Dhoni, could be indicative of underlying "mental issues" that Yograj refuses to accept. Yuvraj's words on a podcast show his concern with his father's incessant complaints and allegations, which have made headlines.
"I think my father has mental issues and he just doesn't want to accept it," Yuvraj had said in a podcast.
