Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan is 'pain-free' and hopeful of playing against India in their upcoming ODI World Cup 2023 clash in Pune on Thursday, October 19.

Shakib sustained a grade I tear in his quadriceps during the clash against New Zealand in Chennai. The all-rounder's participation against India will depend on how he will perform in Tuesday's nets session.

"Shakib is getting better. He is pain-free. But we will know the full scenario when he hits the nets tomorrow. He will also do running between the wickets. We are hopeful that he can play against India. He worked in a swimming session, and some upper-half work in the gym today. There will be a scan tomorrow which will give us a clearer picture of his situation," ESPNcricinfor quoted Bangladesh Team director Khaled Mahmud as saying.

Shakib played a knock of 40 runs along with Mushfiqur Rahim's 66 to guide Bangladesh to 245/9 in 50 overs. He also scalped one wicket in his 10 overs spell, giving away 54 runs.

Daryl Mitchell's unbeaten 89* and Kane Williamson's 78* before getting hurt on his left thumb steered New Zealand to an eight-wicket win against Bangladesh.

On Shakib's chances of playing against India, Mahmud made it clear that the final call would be taken by the physio and doctor as they do not want to risk their star player in the marquee tournament.

"Usually these injuries produce a lot of pain. It is tough to walk around even. Shakib is quite well. It is giving us hope. Shakib wants to play, so if the situation is that he is 85-90% fit, like he was in the last game after getting injured, we are hopeful too. But it depends on his 100% fitness," he said.

"We don't want him to miss the rest of the tournament after playing one more game. There are six matches remaining. It is the doctor and physio's call. We don't want to trouble him in the long term. If he gets clearance from the physio, he will play," Mahmud further added.

Bangladesh are placed at the seventh spot in the points table with only one win in three matches. On the other hand, India are unbeaten in the tournament with three successive wins and claim the top place in the standings.
