ODI World Cup 2023: Jos Buttler and Co. have had a horrible ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 as they stand on the brink of getting eliminated from the tournament after suffering a humiliating defeat against India on Sunday.

Despite going down for the fifth time out of their six matches, England are at the bottom of the points table with just two points under their belt.

While the loss against the table-toppers India at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow has hampered their chances to go forward in the tournament, there is a slight and tough chance for them to make it to the final four.

The defending champions are yet to be eliminated mathematically despite winning just one match in the tournament so far as they have to dig deep to make it to the semifinals and also depend on other results.

Talking about their campaign, England started with a defeat against New Zealand followed by a win over Bangladesh. Buttler-led side then lost four successive matches, ending up on the wrong side against Afghanistan in Delhi, South Africa in Mumbai, Sri Lanka in Bengaluru, and India in Lucknow on Sunday.

How can England still qualify?

England have three matches remaining in the tournament and they can reach a maximum of eight points after winning them all. So, there isn't any possibility for them to surpass India's (12) and South Africa's (10) tally in the points table. The best they can do is equal the tally of New Zealand and Australia.

If England win all of their remaining matches and either or both New Zealand or Australia lose all their remaining three matches, the defending champions' chances will get a boost. In such a case, all three teams will have the same number of points, and the team with a better net run rate will go through.

However, the equation doesn't stand as easy as it looks. Apart from winning their matches and having favorable results in England and Australia's matches, England will have to depend on other results as well.

As things stand, each of Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and the Netherlands still have a chance to finish with higher points than England. That means England will also have to hope that all those teams lose at least one match and be able to improve their NRR.
