The wicketkeeper-batter replaced Shubman Gill, who was ruled out of the Test due to a neck injury that he suffered on Day 2 of the opening encounter.

Notably, since India played its first Test in 1932, a total of 38 players have led India, but Pant became only the second designated wicketkeeper-batter to captain India after legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
