IND vs WI: As per reports, a green pitch will be used for the series opener between India and West Indies. The West Indies Test team had landed in India and will be locking horns with the host for the first Test match at Narendra Modi Stadium.

Red-soil pitch with decent grass covering likely for 1st IND vs WI Test

As per ESPNCricinfo, red soil will be used at this venue for the first Test match against West Indies. The report revealed that the pitch has a layer of lush green grass. Since there is still one more day left for the match, the curator will likely cut the grass by about 4-5mm.

The likely behaviour of Narendra Modi Stadium's pitch is explained

A 4-5mm of grass might actually help the pacers as it will produce seam movement, especially when the grass is hard and new. Red soil does help the bowlers by giving them extra bounce, and the batters from both teams will find it hard to score runs if the bowlers bowl their line and length brilliantly.

At the same time, the red soil pitches can't retain the moisture, unlike the black sil pitches. And when the sun goes down, the pitch might deteriorate quickly and become spinners-friendly as the match progresses. The fast bowlers might get seam movement and additional bounce, but the grass covering will stop the pitch from deteriorating faster.

And if a green deck is used in Ahmedabad, then the Indian team management might pick Nitish Kumar Reddy instead of Kuldeep Yadav. At the same time, the visitors will be missing the services of Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph, who could have given a hard time to India's batting line-up.
