IND vs WI 2nd Test: India's head coach Gautam Gambhir hasn't guaranteed a place for star India batter Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in India's squad for the 2027 World Cup ahead of their comeback match after eight months. Both Kohli and Rohit last played for India in the Champions Trophy 2025 and will next be seen in action in the ODI series against Australia.
Gambhir made these statements in the post-match press conference after India had defeated West Indies by 2-0 in the Test series. This was the team's first Test series win under Shubman Gill's captaincy, who took over the reins from Rohit earlier this year.
Gambhir repeated Ajit Agarkar's statements about Kohli and Rohit's future in the 50-over format. He did reveal that he will assess the situation one match after another and then take the final decision about them in the 2027 World Cup.
The 2027 World Cup is 2.5 years away. It’s important to stay in the present. Kohli and Rohit are both quality players. Hopefully, they have a successful tour in Australia,” Gambhir told reporters in the post-match conference.
Agarkar ignored a question recently about Kohli and Rohit's future and whether they will play in the ODI World Cup despite them being a part of the ODI series against Australia. This statement came after a media report that this series will be a do-or-die situation for them. Gill had dismissed claims after becoming the ODIn skipper, and that the team does need their experience and their match-winning abilities in a mega event.
Gambhir also made an appearance after Kohli came back to India after 4 months, as he was seen at the Delhi airport. After IPL 2025, where he won his first title for RCB, he then flew to London with his family. He was also seen attending a practice session for this series in London and even gave his pre-season fitness test.
At the same time, Rohit Sharma was seen attending a practice session at NCA last month, and then was seen practicing at Shivaji Park with Abhishek Nayar.
Both the star players will be flying to Australia with the team on Wednesday.
