India women vs South Africa women match: Smriti Mandhana, India's star opener, scripted history during their match against South Africa in the ongoing ICC Women's World Cup 2025 at the Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Thursday.
Mandhana and Pratika Rawal took the crease for India after they were put into bat first. Having looked impressive during the opening partnership with Pratika, Mandhana smashed the record of scoring the most runs in a calendar year in women’s ODIs. The left-handed batter headed into the match 12 runs short of the incredible milestone.

She went past Belinda Clark's record and achieved the objective during the eighth over of India’s innings. On the first ball of the over bowled by Ayabonga Khaka, Mandhana smacked a six down the ground to reach the 13-run mark.

Former Australian captain Clark played 16 matches in 1997 and amassed a total of 970 runs, whereas Mandhana now has 972 runs to her credit in 17 matches.

Mandhana has been in remarkable form with the bat this year and headed into the World Cup on the back of an incredible effort during the home series against Australia. She smashed two centuries, one of which came in just 50 balls during the series decider at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
The 29-year-old cricketer from Maharashtra is India’s second-highest run-getter in women’s ODIs. The young batter was dismissed for 23 runs in 32 balls as Nonkululeko Mlaba dismissed her in the 11th over. She needs 58 more runs to complete 5000 runs in ODIs.
As of now, only four batters have managed to score more than 5000 runs in WODIs. The record for scoring the most runs in women’s ODIs is in the name of former India captain Mithali Raj.

Talking about the ongoing match, India got an opening stand of 55 runs between Mandhana and Pratika Rawal. The Women in Blue headed into the match with an aim to make it three out of three, having outclassed Sri Lanka and Pakistan in their first two matches.
