Senior Indian batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are all set to make their much-awaited return to international cricket as they will be seen in action in the upcoming Australia tour. They haven't played for India since the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, having retired from the T20I and Test formats.
India will be up against Australia for a three-match ODI series, starting on October 19, and it will be followed by five T20I matches. Virat and Rohit were included in the 15-member ODI squad, with Shubman Gill becoming India's new captain in the format.

Rohit and Virat, along with newly-appointed ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer, are set to join the rest of the Indian squad in New Delhi ahead of the team’s departure for Australia. As per a PTI report, the Indian team will depart for Australia in two separate batches on October 15, with the major dependency on the travel logistics and business class ticket availability when it comes to the final departure schedule.
Notably, Gill will be in action in the second Test against the West Indies, which begins on October 10 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. One group is scheduled to fly out in the morning, while the second batch will leave later in the evening. Kohli and Rohit, who are not part of the ongoing two-match Test series against West Indies, are expected to arrive in the national capital either on the day of departure or a day prior, depending on personal schedules.
The three-match series in Australia will be crucial for Virat and Rohit in order to remain alive in the race for the ODI World Cup 2027.
Meanwhile, newly-appointed ODI vice-captain Shreyas, who was not picked for the Asia Cup, will play a crucial role in the upcoming series as India continues to build its limited-overs core under the leadership of Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Ahead of the second Test and subsequent Australia tour, head coach Gambhir invited the entire squad for a team dinner at his Rajinder Nagar residence in New Delhi. The gathering served as a bonding session for the players before facing some big challenges in the upcoming overseas assignment.
